Students and employers value vocational skills over
university degrees [Taiwan]

A survey by online job site
“yes 123” shows that 62% of Taiwan’s job seekers found that
practical skills improved their chances of getting a job compared
to a university degree. Companies participating in the survey also
viewed practical skills as more valuable with 81.9% saying they
offered higher wages to those with specialised skills, and 45%
observing that those with such skills were more likely to be
fast-tracked to promotion. The growing value of vocational
education is being reflected in course choices as Government
statistics show 23,004 more student enrolments in Taiwan on
vocational courses in 2009 compared to 2005 with a fall in take-up
of high school courses (17,425 fewer students in 2009 compared to
2005 ). Most job opportunities are opening up in the fields of web
program design, graphic design, web page design and multimedia
design.
