SkillsOne
Project purpose
SkillsOne
inspires young people, career counsellors, parents and
mature-
aged workers to develop positive attitudes towards
trades and skills. It also enables them to become more
informed of the great diversity offered through vocational
education and the exciting emerging career opportunities available
to them.
Launched in Sydney in 2007, SkillsOne works with industry,
educators, government and TAFE to engage and promote the extensive
career opportunities and pathways in traditional trades and
emerging skills areas, ranging from automotive, electrical and
mining, through to hairdressing, healthcare and horticulture.
In May 2008, Skillsone.com.au was recognised internationally by
winning a prestigious Webby Award. Hailed as the ‘Oscars of the
internet’ by The New York Times, the Webby Awards are the leading
international accolades recognising excellence on the internet. The
SkillsOne website was one of only two Australian sites to win in
the 2008 Awards. SkillsOne attracts around 20,000 visitors per
month.
Project
approach
A lack of information, advice and guidance
(IAG) plus the convoluted terms and systems associated with
technical and vocational education are becoming a barrier to
take-up in Australia.
In a country with an ageing population and increasing skills
shortages, it was recognised that something needed to be done to
encourage young people into trades. In today’s hi-tech and
media-friendly environment, there is no better way to reach and
inform young people than through the internet and television.
SkillsOne has more than 1200 videos on its website, featuring real
stories and interviews with apprentices, employers, TAFEs and
RTOs.
SkillsOne TV is broadcast on Foxtel and Austar cable networks
daily. The episodes are short, inspirational and educational video
stories about apprentices and employers, career pathways and
industry sectors, as well as trainers and teachers. The integration
of SkillsOne television and website is complemented by a media
partnership with News Ltd whereby the SkillsOne website links to
its cross-media employment network, CareerOne. CareerOne is the
leading online job site for trades and skills with more than 1
million page views per month. The presence of SkillsOne on
CareerOne provides a further avenue to promote content and attract
visitors to the site seeking career guidance and information.
