CPD for teaching offenders in the community and other vulnerable or marginalised learners

A resource for learning and skills practitioners

8. Embedding learning

Length of time suggested: Two hours

Session plan

In this session there are six suggested activities (see the Activities sheet). We suggest that you select one activity from the first four activities, which all involve small group discussion. If you find that you are running out of time in the session, you could plan to do Activity 6, the planning activity, at a follow-up session.

Before the session

To facilitate the session, you should familiarise yourself with the guidance document, the slides and the activities. It may also be useful for you to read the Embedding chapter of the evidence review.

Activity 5 requires participants to prepare before the session by selecting some of their students’ work. You will need to tell them what they should bring to the session in good time.

After the session

For continuing professional development and to sustain learning from this session, it is helpful to encourage reflection on practice at regular intervals. A useful follow-on activity would be to bring together groups of close colleagues to plan a future development cycle for themselves, based around experimenting with some or all of these ideas in their teaching sessions, as in Activity 6.
