Applications to university fall by nearly 9 per cent after introduction of £9,000 fees per annum

Applications for university courses starting in 2012 are down by
8.9 per cent across the UK, in comparison with last year. The
biggest fall (10 per cent) was in England, where students starting
courses in September will be the first cohort to pay £9,000 tuition
fees, up from around £3,000 for courses starting in 2011.The
smallest decrease (2 per cent) was in Scotland, where there are no
university tuition fees. UCAS figures show that in England, the
reduction in applications is largest amongst mature students, with
applications down by 15 to 20 per cent by those aged over 19, while
applicants aged 18 are only down by 1 per cent.
